It is the recommended treatment for all patients with frequently recurring high grade Ta. \u00a0It is recommended for all patients with T1 stage bladder tumor and CIS of the bladder. \u00a0The benefits of BCG are numerous including decreased tumor recurrence and progression. \u00a0The evidence points that BCG treatment likely also improves survival of patients with bladder cancer and decreases the need for major bladder surgery.<\/p>\n<p>[col type=&#8221;one-fourth&#8221;]<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dralexurology.com\/bladder-cancer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/09\/second_opinion_shutterstock_153048527.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-162\" alt=\"second_opinion_shutterstock_153048527\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dralexurology.com\/bladder-cancer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/09\/second_opinion_shutterstock_153048527-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/col]<\/p>\n<p>[col type=&#8221;three-fourth last&#8221;]The recommended protocol for BCG administration by the National Cancer Care Network guidelines is an induction course of BCG of 6 weeks followed by maintenance BCG for 3 years. If the tumor recurs, the recommendations are more complex and depend on a variety of factors including patient condition, disease grade and stage and patient ability to tolerate other treatments.<\/p>\n<p>[\/col]<\/p>\n<h2>BCG for CIS<\/h2>\n<p>BCG has been shown to be effective for carcinoma in situ of the bladder. Current evidence suggests that it decreases the rate and frequency of recurrence and prevents disease progression.<\/p>\n<h2>BCG for Upper Tract (ureteral and kidney) Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC)<\/h2>\n<p>BCG has been used for upper tract BCG. We administer it via nephrostomy tube. \u00a0It is appropriate for a select group of patients with careful follow up.<\/p>\n<h2>How BCG is administered<\/h2>\n<p>BCG is administered via a urethral catheter that is temporarily inserted into the bladder.
