Medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, vascular disease, neuropathy and kidney failure can cause ED. Hormonal imbalance such as low testosterone, abnormal thyroid levels and abnormal prolactin or cortisol levels can contribute or cause erectile dysfunction. Stress, tension and anxiety can also contribute and cause ED.  ED can also be situational such as with a new partner. Men treated for prostate cancer commonly develop ED.

It is a common misconception that ED is a disease of the older male. In fact ED is very prevalent among younger men. The problems of erectile dysfunction increases with age. We see and help men 20-50 years old who experience problems of ED as often as we see men over 60 with this problem.

Inability to obtain an erection is always abnormal at any age.  ED can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and keeping good control of cholesterol, blood pressure and eating a healthy diet. In diabetic patients it is important to have good control of diabetes to prevent erectile dysfunction.

While ED and itself is not a life-threatening problem the underlying causes of ED can be dangerous and require thorough evaluation and treatment.

For men who desire to have erections for sexual intercourse, very effective treatment options for ED are almost always available.

Typically evaluation for erectile dysfunction would involve taking blood pressure cholesterol and hormone levels of testosterone and thyroid hormones. In some men, additional evaluation would be warranted

Treatment options include medications such as Viagra and Cialis which are taken as pills. For those men for whom Viagra and Cialis do not work other treatment options are available including injections of medications in the penis, vacuum pumps and implantable penile prosthesis.  For men with diabetes and ED help is available as well.
