Erectile dysfunction or ED also commonly called impotence is inability to attain and maintain an erection that is adequate for sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is also commonly called impotence. The are many causes for ED. Medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, vascular disease, neuropathy and kidney failure can cause ED. Hormonal imbalance such as low testosterone, abnormal thyroid levels and abnormal prolactin or cortisol levels can contribute or cause erectile dysfunction. Stress, tension and anxiety can also contribute and cause ED.  ED can also be situational such as with a new partner. Men treated for prostate cancer commonly develop ED.
